When a death occurs, mourners frequently are left alone in their grief because friends and family are uncomfortable around the griever and do not know how to offer support.  This is especially the case for adolescents and young adults, many of whom are in college.  Framed around the personal loss experienced by the speaker, Illene Cupit discusses her research on social media and death, which illustrates how mourners find supportive connections online. Illene Noppe Cupit is the Ben J. and Joyce Rosenberg Professor of Human Development, Psychology and Gender Studies at UW-Green Bay. She received her Ph.D. from the Educational Psychology Department of Temple University. Her research and publications have focused on college student bereavement, adolescent grief, the influence of the Internet in death and dying, and global issues related to trauma and loss. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
