Raising & Processing Meat Chickens || Start to Finish || How we Do it on Our Homestead...

Hi friends! Chicken meat is a regular in our home. Unfortunately, to try and buy organic chicken meat from the grocery store that is not injected with growth hormones and raised in a dirty/inhumane environment is hard to do because they make organic meat SO expensive! I mean, who can afford to eat RIGHT??
Since we love chicken meat, we've been raising meat chickens here on the farm for about a year now. We buy our broiler chicks from a reputable hatchery online and then raise the birds to about 8-10 wks of age before slaughtering.
Raising meat birds is inexpensive and in my opinion easy to do. They don't require much, good food, fresh water, and a dry/clean shelter...that's it. Butcher day can get a bit tedious as we usually do 15-25 birds each time, but...it is so worth it in the end when that freezer is stocked with fresh meat!
There is something about raising your own food and putting in the blood, sweat & tears to have your own meat! You know where it came from and most importantly, you know how it was raised; what it ate, how it was cared for, etc. It's extremely important to us that these birds have an amazing quality of life while they're here on our farm.
In the chicken tractor they get all of the bugs and fresh grass they could possibly want! That IS the natural diet of these birds. We do supplement with grain but for the most part these birds are on a natural diet. They get to layout in the sunshine and dust their feathers in the sand...they have it good, really good!
When butcher day comes, it's quick and humane. That's also very important to us. That goes for any of the animals we butcher here on the farm. They don't even know what's comin'.
I know there are a lot of different views and opinions on eating meat. However, this channel is a representation of our beliefs and how we roll on Amaryllis Acres Homestead. And we LOVE a full diet of homegrown fresh meat, veggies and dairy!
In this ever so changing world, it is scary to trust your food in the hands of the large food industry. Seems like every time you turn around there's another recall on the news and people are getting sick and dying from it!
I'm in no way saying we 100% grow all of our own food...not even close BUT we try the best we can!
By the end of this years fall season, our freezer/fridge & pantry will be stocked with homegrown beef, pork, chicken, veggies and dairy products! While the cost involved with feeding and maintaining the animals and the garden here on our farm doesn't scratch the costs that are associated with buying all of these things from the grocery store...it does give us something that you just can't put a price tag on...and that's peace of mind, and a sense of accomplishment at the end of a long hard day!
