Seven Performance Takeoffs, Four Ship
Seven Performance Takeoffs, Four Ship Formation, Blackjack returns and super TedCam™ clips feature in this intense action packed RAF Coningsby highlights from the 22nd August 2022.
In more detail;
A superb triple performance takeoff (PTO) from 29 squadron, TRIPLE X flight. The followed by a single PTO and then just when four PTOs wasn't enough,3 (F) Squadron rock up with three Typhoons 'Rampage' for a three ship PTO. This made seven performance takeoffs in a row!
We love to educate our viewer here at the TCS and we mentioned 'Flight Level' and altitude. Now the calculations for altitude and flight level are based on atmospheric pressure 'Barometer' and AMSL (Above Mean Sea Level), we gave you a quick understanding of aviation terms, this being 'FLIGHT LEVEL'. This term is heard constantly on the radio and of course it would be as it relates to altitude, a key part of aviation. Flight level (FL) is used in 100s, 1 FL= 100ft so for example
FL30 = 3,000ft
FL80 = 8,000ft
FL150 = 15,000ft
FL250 = 25,000
etc
Ted's home, RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire is one of two RAF Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) Stations which protect UK airspace. RAF Lossiemouth is the other which we are visiting on the 21st of September 2022 for 2 days.
RAF Coningsby is home to two frontline, combat-ready squadrons 3 (F) squadron and XI (F) squadron. It is the training station for Typhoon pilots, 29 Squadron is the OCU.
Also station here are 12 squadron, 41 TES as well as the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF), which is in fact a regular RAF unit and funded by the MoD. RAF Coningsby is also home to the Typhoon Display team....ooooh yeahhhhh
Almost 3,000 Service Personnel, Civil Servants, contractors and one bear work at RAF Coningsby...
Some key dates for you:
1941 - RAF Coningsby opened, serving as an RAF Bomber Command station until the early 1960s.
Coningsby has been a fighter station since the Phantom arrived in the late 1960s, followed by the Tornado and now the Typhoon.
1976 - Coningsby became home to the world-famous RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
2021 - Sqn Ldr Ted Coningsby flew in 'Blackjack' ZJ914 for her maiden flight
