Dr. Ebraheim’s educational animated video describes the anatomy of the lumbrical muscles in the hand.

There are four lumbrical muscles on the palmar side of the hand. The lumbricals arise from the radial side of the flexor digitorum profundus tendons. The lumbricals pass volar to the transverse metacarpal ligament. All the lumricals are inserted on the radial side of the extensor expansion.
The function of the four lumbricals (with help from the interosseous muscle) is to flex the metacarpophalangeal joints and extend the interphalangeal joints. When the lumrbical muscles contract, it draws the lateral band proximally and pulls the FDP distally which relaxes the tendon. Contraction of the lumbricals relaxes flexor pull on the DIP joint.
The deep branch of the ulnar nerve innervates the 3rd and 4th lumbricals while the median nerve innervates the 1st and 2nd lumbricals. The lumbricals play a key role in a hand deformity known as lumbrical plus finger.
