Questioner: "Regarding the issue of the meat here [in France]. That which was widespread between the Muslims [here] was searching for ḥalāl (lawful) meat. But they (some duʿāt in France) found some fatwā’s from the likes of Sh. Ibn Bāz and Sh. al-ʿUthaymīn, may Allāh have mercy upon them, wherein they said that one shouldn’t investigate, but rather the origin is that those people are Ahlul-Kitāb (People of the Scripture) and their meat is permissible. So they use these fatwā’s and they say to the people in public lessons in front of the laymen… And this has caused problems between the people (Muslims in France) since they were convinced that the meat (of the disbelievers) is not ḥalāl at all in France. So they (those duʿāt) literally started saying to them: “Go to the French restaurants and eat in them.”"
Shaykh al-Bukhārī: "They say it like that, without restriction?!"
Questioner: "Yes, without any restriction! They even told them the name (of some restaurants). Some of them said… Is McDonalds known to you [O Shaykh]?"
Shaykh al-Bukhārī: "Yes, it is known."
Questioner: "They said it like that: “Go to McDonalds and eat there.” Without restraint/caution or anything."
Shaykh al-Bukhārī: "I seek refuge with Allāh from betrayal. This is from betrayal. The people are steadfast upon the Command of Allāh, searching for ḥalāl, why do you come turn them away from this?! Why do you turn them away? This is from a lack of fiqh and from recklessness in understanding. We seek refuge with Allāh. The people are searching for that which is ḥalāl, far away from any shubhah (doubt). And then you come and weaken their determination by telling them they shouldn’t search for that which is ḥalāl or go to it. So you have caused them to forsake aiding of the truth and adhering to it. The second thing: Yes, the meat of Ahlul-Kitāb is permissible. It is permissible to eat it, but not wājib (obligatory)! This is one thing.
The third thing, may Allāh bless you: this is regarding those about whom it is known that they are from Ahlul-Kitāb. Not when the Atheists, Buddhists, Hindus, Majūs (fire worshippers), etc, are mixed with them. Can you say with certainty that the owner of this shop is from Ahlul-Kitāb? You are not able to do so. The fact that he lives in France, doesn’t mean that [he is from Ahlul-Kitāb]. Right? May Allāh bless you. So here it is obligatory to be cautious (and be on the safe side). Cautiousness is obligatory here! When I know that someone is from Ahlul-Kitāb, but I don’t know how exactly he slaughtered (the animal), then there’s no problem in eating that meat. If someone asks me: “But what if I know that he is from Ahlul-Kitāb and [I know] that he didn’t slaughter according to the Islamic Legislation?” In that case it’s not permissible because he didn’t slaughter it [correctly] in the first place. That is clear. If it was clearly electrocuted, then it’s not permissible to eat it. This is if it was a Muslim who did it here in al-Madīnah or Makkah. When it is known that someone didn’t slaughter according to the Islamic Legislation, then it’s not permissible to eat his meat, even if he is a Muslim who isn’t from Ahlul-Kitāb. Even if it was next to al-Ḥaram al-Makkī (the Meccan Sanctuary). Why do they search for things like this, while the people, alḥamdulillāh, want to search for their religion and that which makes them steadfast in the affair of their religion? This person comes and weakens their determination [by telling them:] “Go and eat from this and that place”? I fear that he perhaps may be a shareholder in this place (which is why he tells the people to go eat there). We ask Allāh for safety."
