The woman, who has not been identified, was pictured striding through the streets of the Afghan capital (above) without a traditional burqa (inset) which normally covers the whole body. The images quickly circulated on social media where they have been sharply dividing opinion, with some expressing outrage at her actions and others saluting her courage. Women are subjected to severe religious restrictions in Afghanistan requiring them to wear full-body clothing such as the burqa.
