How to Simulate Dynamics of a Spinning Yo-yo Using Ansys Mechanical

The design of a spinning object, such as a yo-yo, should have proper mass distribution and balance, the lack of which can lead to unwanted wobble or oscillations. In this video we use Ansys Mechanical to simulate a spinning yo-yo to check its dynamic behavior and predict any oscillation or wobble that may be caused due to its mass distribution. Using insights from the simulations, we alter the yo-yo design to minimize the wobble and ensure smooth spinning of the yo-yo. In addition, we also simulate a case where manufacturing inaccuracies can lead to gyroscopic precession. Thus, we demonstrate the usefulness of simulations for obtaining insights into non-intuitive dynamic behavior of the yo-yo.
