Not all Walmart bikes are bad bikes. You can get a good Big Box Bike if you know what to look for and pick the best store to buy front.

First you must know that "Walmart bike" has come to encompass all Big Box Bikes. Walmart is the largest seller of department store bikes, so their name has come to symbolize any department store bicycle. Much like 'moped' can mean a moped or a scooter, even though those are two different types of cycle. I owned a 300cc Vespa GTS that would do 80mph, but my insurance and the state registration both said "Moped." It may not be technically correct, but it's the way it is.

You also need to know there are tradeoffs in both quality and features when buying a low priced Walmart bike. For everything that's added, something is sacrificed to keep the price low. Either lower quality components or mis-matching parts like brake types from front to rear will be commonly seen on any Walmart / Big Box Bike. That's not a problem unless you take that Mountain-styled bike onto a rough trail and try to push it. For the average rider, there is no problem with the lower quality or mis-matched components.

You also need to know that the assembly can vary from store-to-store. One store may do an 'OK' job, but another (even from the same company) may lack in assembly quality or attention to detail. I've seen handlebars that weren't tight, brakes that were non-functional, and forks on bikes backwards. You have to check out the bike assembly if you're buying a bike off the shelf.

Finally you need to know that there is a stigma that many people put on a Walmart bike. There is a great deal of elitism in cycling. Some of it may be valid. Obviously an expensive bike shop bike is the best choice if you can afford it, but not everyone can afford an expensive bike, so the decision between riding and not riding can mean buying from a Big Box / Department Store like Walmart, Sears, Kmart or Target. There should be no shame in riding what you can buy or get as a gift. Someone worked hard to provide that bike, and you can trust me when I say you can have just as much fun on a cheap bike as you can on an expensive one. Take care of what you have and it can serve you well.
