Day 150. 44km (80159kms 7yrs)

Again preoccupied by hiding from the road with no thought to the morning, I woke in a location exposed to the sun’s rays in an already rather sweaty tent.

Without a functioning stove there was no reason to hang about so I packed down and began the 7kms into the nearest village. The bumpy road and headwind made for a grumpy ride until I could get my fix at a cafe filled with men drinking in the shade beside a small fish market.

Now properly ready for my day I first stopped at a 15th century mosque on the beach - closed - before continuing to a very sparse Roman site, also on the seafront. I’ll be glad to tune around tomorrow because this North Easterly I’ve been heading into the last couple of days is becoming increasingly frustrating. Head down into the wind I past a couple of kite surfing beaches before arriving at the village of Aghir with its a pier protruding into a stunning turquoise sea and white powder sand. But despite what the men were wearing the women swimming were all fully dressed and so unwilling to get my cycling clothes all salty (on top of the sweat salt I was already contributing) I continued on towards the ‘zone touristique’.

After a rather touristy and lazy lunch I made my way to the peninsula where I hoped to find a discreet camp site on the beach. Camels munched on hotel hedgerows, flags fluttered, and tourists scooted about on quad bikes. At the end of the road to my utter delight I found an abandoned but completely open resort with dozens of little concret bunker bungalows all open offering almost unlimited choices of hidden places to camp.

When I arrived the beach was empty but for one man. On my way back from the water three other men had arrived for a swim, one of whom took an interest in where I was heading, following me 10 minutes later to tell me I couldn’t be there on account of dogs, incredibly. Infuriated at being ordered away from this ideal campsite by some busybody I took myself off to another bunker cabin on the other side of the resort and watched sunset as countless locals drove back along the sandy access road from the very end of the peninsular. After dark I selected yet another cabin choosing one which only opened on one side, ramming the swollen door shut behind me and pitching the tent without use of a torch so as not to draw any further attention to myself.
