Avascular necrosis (AVN) of the
Avascular necrosis (AVN) of the Femoral head is a pathologic process that results from the interruption of blood supply to the bone. Femoral head ischemia causes bone marrow and osteocytic death, leading to the collapse of the necrotic segment of the head of the Femur.
In this Video Dr.Bajwa discusses the surgical options for Avascular necrosis.
Treatment goals for AVN are to improve joint health, stop bone damage, and ease pain. The best treatment will depend on a number of things, like:
- Your age
- Stage of the disease
- Cause of AVN
Dr. Bajwa also talks about Core decompression which is a surgical procedure that requires surgical drilling into the area of dead bone near the joint, reducing pressure and allowing for increased blood flow. This aims to slow or stop bone and/or joint destruction
If it isn’t treated, AVN can cause the bone to collapse and lead to painful hip arthritis.
