The Arteria Pulmonalis is a thin vessel that comes directly from the right ventricle. This splits into two main branches to provide the blood to the alveoli. Compared with arteries of the systemic circulation, the corresponding branches of the Arteria Pulmonalis are shorter and have a larger diameter.
The size and extensibility of these vessels allows the pulmonary vascular tree to accommodate much more blood when blood pressure rises. This property is called vascular compliance. This feature allows the pulmonary vascular tree to adapt to the large volume of oxygen-poor blood that is supplied from the right ventricle with each heartbeat.

The Venae Pulmonalis, which, like the Arteriae Pulmonalis, are short, transport oxygen-rich blood from the lungs to the left atrium. This blood flows through to the left ventricle and is then pumped to the rest of the body. The extensibility of the Venae Pulmonalis is comparable to the extensibility of the vessels in the systemic circulation.
