The mental health situation of refugees trapped in Nauru is devastating and beyond desperate. During the last 11 months, our teams have been treating multiple cases of suicide attempts, suicide ideation and self-harm, with children as young as 9 years old telling that they would prefer to die than stay in the limbo of Nauru. Many of the refugees have been separated from their family members, almost all families have a child suffering traumatic withdrawal syndrome (resignation syndrome) and exist in a semi-comatose state, unable to eat, drink or talk.
