Sentence fragments break a fundamental rule of writing: using complete sentences that express a clear thought. The sentence fragment can lack a subject, a verb, or both that keep the group of words from expressing a complete thought.

How to Fix Sentence Fragments: The main way is to attach a fragment to the sentence before or after it. Most sentence fragments are actually punctuation errors caused by:

-ing phrases (participles)
-to phrases (infinitives)
-subordinate clauses (which, when, because, etc.)
-end of sentence explanations

Sentence fragments are prevalent in long, complex sentences that require knowledge of sentence parts and punctuation skills. These long sentences can disguise the lack of a subject and finite verb. The same problem can happen in paragraphs, when surrounding sentences can make the sentence fragment seem complete.

Auto-correction tools catch many sentence fragments but also miss many types of fragments, especially those that begin with connector words:

-for example
-for instance
-such as
-then

An effective method of detecting sentence fragments is to read the passage out loud or have someone else read the passage aloud to you. Sentence fragments will usually quickly come to light. When they do, use one of the five methods of fixing sentence fragments in this video.
