In this video series, Dr. Ashley Girard, a naturopathic doctor based in Ontario, Canada, shares how naturopathy can help people facing chronic UTIs and bladder conditions.

In Ontario, naturopaths are considered doctors and there is a wide scope to offer support to patients in a variety of ways. There is a college that oversees the profession, working to ensure patients are kept safe and practice is regulated. In addition to their usual work in diagnosis and running labs, naturopathic doctors in Ontario can undertake further training to be able to prescribe treatments such as bioidentical hormones.

While there is broad scope in Ontario, Canada, Dr. Girard explains that naturopathy services differ depending on the country and region. In some areas, the profession is not regulated. It is important to find out what is available in your area and what credentials your naturopathic doctor has.

Naturopathy focuses on considering the patient as a whole, implementing individualized treatment and aiming to treat the root cause of a problem. Dr. Girard stresses that because we are all different, a treatment plan for one patient is not necessarily going to work for another patient. Because of this, naturopaths don’t tend to work with a “protocol.” Naturopaths like to view the patient as an expert of their own body, seeking to understand the various facets of a patient that may contribute to health issues.

Naturopaths work to use the healing power of nature. Following the idea that the body has an innate ability to heal, they believe that the right treatment can harness and support this ability. Dr. Girard explains that naturopathic doctors also support their patients in a teaching role, helping them to learn the fundamentals of living a healthy life and taking care of their bodies. This will help not only to treat existing problems, but could also help prevent new problems arising.

The Therapeutic Order is used as a guide to help patients using the least force necessary. Initially, the focus is on establishing the foundations for optimal health, including diet, lifestyle, and stress. From there, naturopathic therapies will be implemented in order to stimulate the body’s natural healing mechanisms. This may involve other professionals such as physiotherapists or chiropractors. If this doesn’t work, the last resorts may include pharmaceuticals and potentially high force interventions (e.g. surgery).

As long as you find a doctor who is regulated by a professional body who holds them accountable, naturopathy is overall very safe. Dr. Girard explains that there are generally fewer risks involved than with pharmaceuticals and surgical procedures, with most side effects limited to stomach upset, diarrhea, or maybe some dizziness.
