"Louis Armstrong 1900-1971" - Rare CBS Tribute to Louis Armstrong July 9, 1971

The funeral of Louis Armstrong took place 50 years ago today on July 9, 1971. That evening, at 7:30 p.m., CBS television aired a one-hour special, "Louis Armstrong 1900-1971," hosted by Walter Cronkite. It included footage of Armstrong's funeral, footage of Armstrong himself, and music and remembrances from an all-star assemblage featuring Dizzy Gillespie, Bobby Hackett, Tyree Glenn, Budd Johnson, Earl "Fatha" Hines, Milt Hinton, Buddy Rich, and Peggy Lee. It only aired once and has never appeared on YouTube or online--until now. CBS sent a copy of the broadcast to Lucille Armstrong and after having it digitized thanks to a grant from Fund II Foundation, we're thrilled to share the complete broadcast for the first time in 50 years!
