You’re in for a most curious journey when you visit Mussenden Temple.

Perched on the cliffs of northwestern Ireland, this striking circular building was originally constructed as a library for the Bishop of Derry. Following a tour of Mussenden Temple, you might think its classical style is slightly out of place amidst Ireland’s largely medieval architecture—and you would be right.

Mussenden Temple sightseeing reveals a building inspired by the Temple of Vesta in Italy. It is said that in 1777, the Bishop of Derry tried to purchase the Temple of Vesta and have it transported to Ireland, but his efforts were rebuffed. As a result, he built Mussenden Temple, which now stands watch over the cliffs and the roiling blue sea below.
