An ANZAC Day tribute to those fallen and their families.
On the 25th of April, 1915, at 4:30am, Australian and New Zealand soldiers arrive at ANZAC Cove at the Gallipoli peninsula, Turkey. This was an attempt to capture Constantinople (Istanbul), which would give them a strategic advantage during the war. Constantinople was the capital of the Ottoman Empire.
They were met with heavy resistance from the Ottoman Army. This resulted in a stalemate between both sides causing the Gallipoli campaign to last eight months.
There were many casualties on both sides. The total deaths from the Allied forces exceeded 56,000. 8,709 of these were Australian and 2,721 were New Zealanders. Despite the unsuccessful campaign, the heroism and sacrifice of those who died had such an impact that it created the "ANZAC Legend".
The 25th of April became a remembrance day, known as ANZAC Day.
