This is one topic which is so important yet not so frequently discussed and needs a lot of awareness. In today's age, Diabetes is a lifestyle disease that is present in almost every household, be it a developed country like the United States or a developing country like ours.

Now this disease may seem fairly simple to treat on the outside, but the trust is that it's a silent killer. In the long run, Diabetes is know to have effects on the eyes, heart, kidneys, nerves etc. Apart from these well-know complications that it brings along, Diabetes is well known to cause multiple oral issues as well. Patients with Diabetes are seen to have burning of the mouth, dry mouth and frequent fungal infections in the mouth. But the most prominent of the Oral problems is Gum Disease. Studies have proven that Diabetic patients are prone to Gum Disease three times more as compared to a non-diabetic individual. So those who are affected by the disease are required to take some extra precautions to ensure good Oral Health.

But before we begin, it's important to know why this happens. Fluctuating Diabetes or uncontrolled Diabetes affects the defence mechanism of your body which are the white blood cells (WBC's). This in turn alters the healing process of your body, which means that Diabetic patients can develop Oral and Gum Diseases more easily and more frequently.

Very frequently, as Dentists we are the first to spot Diabetes in patients who are unaware that they are suffering from the disease. Just by a simple gum health examination we do suspect it and send the patient for a routine blood sugar analysis. To the patients surprise, many a times they come back testing positive for Diabetes. So yes, your mouth is literally a mirror of your overall health. And having a Dentist take a look at it from time to time can do you great good.

Gum Disease is nothing but an infection of the gums that results from improper plaque and tartar removal. It is reversible if treated timely. But if left untreated for a long time, it can lead to loosening of test in the jaw bones and teeth tend to fall off at an early age.

The best way to ensure that this doesn't happen to you or someone in your family affected with Diabetes is, make sure you are committed to your Dental Appointments every 3 to 4 months. Diabetic patients need more frequent Dental Cleaning as compared to a non diabetic. Taking this little step and extra precaution by visiting the Dentist on regular intervals will ensure that your plaque levels are under control and all Gum Infections are prevented.

So don't forget to follow this little tip and always have a Healthy Smile!!
