A tour of what we are growing in a Regenerative Agroforestry System (R.A.S.), after three years since it was started on a dry and empty field. In this episode we look at some of the fruits and vegetables that we are growing between the lines of trees. we also look at how the fruits and vegetables produce enough bio-mass to create topsoil to therefor feed the trees and help the forest to grow.  Ecosystem restoration through food production.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As you will see, the emphasis is on ´perennial´ vegetables, but, Why? Well, for example, they live for many years and they are low maintenance, they are often higher in mineral content because of their deep roots, they develop habitats for wildlife and long term microbial relationships that improve soil health,  they can create permanent ground-covers, and they are normally easy to reproduce which inspires sharing. so plant them once and enjoy!

CORRECTION AT 12:42 I mention that plantain (Plantago spp.) and the plaintain banana (Musa × paradisiaca) are in the same family, but they are not! they only share the same name of plantain. But bananas are herbs! we can eat plantago leaves but not banana leaves!

WHAT is R.A.S about?
Building carbon rich soil through the ´´chop and drop´´ of biomass, to create the right environment for a food-forest to thrive. The forest then has the beneficial side effects of inviting back lost rains and providing needed habitat for wild species. By working with succession we can let one level of plants create the right conditions for other plants to flourish. One thing leads to the next, for example moving from grasses to trees. And it´s the same with insects , birds and animals, weather they are domestic or wild. We need to invite and help the smaller lifeforms first, before we can move up to a higher order of succession. So, for example we should provide habitat and food for insects and small birds and mammals before the environment is ready for large numbers of large animals or predators. After some development in the forest-system the individual plants, animals and micro-biology start to work together as a single body, as a macro-being of symbiosis, and as a complex balance of community and support networks, making sure that very little time, energy or space is wasted. The stratification of the tree canopies leads to the most efficient use of three dimensional space, and the most efficient use of the suns energy by using all available rays for photosynthesis.  We try to the best of our ability to make sure that the ground is always covered with either plants or mulch, to make sure that the soil is not naked!

Diversity means stability! Inter-connectedness is key. Natural order equals density and abundance.

We are part of a global network of farmers who are trying to create a viable and productive model that can feed the world, while at the same time addressing the need for.... locally produced food, habitat for wilderness, the cooling of climate through tree shade, the return of lost rains, the creation and protection of top-soil and finally, the empowerment of our local communities through education.

This video was edited by myself, and it was my first time editing a video! so hopefully you will see the future videos improve, as i slowly get my head around all this technological stuff.

Until next thyme!
Peas and lovage.
Keep growing!
