The second piece from this unique evening of bringing together two Tabla Ustads but of two different traditions; the classical tabla of Punjab and the Qawwali tabla of Punjab.
Ustad Shahbaz Hussain is not just the UK's, but one of the worlds leading Punjab gharana classical tabla practitioners. Ustad Dildar Hussain needs very little introduction. He was the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's tabla maestro for over 30 years and he personifies Qawwali tabla. Open the dictionary, and it's simply a picture of him!
Ustad Shahbaz wanted to honour Ustad Dildar with this arrangement; a conversation between two traditions of the tabla that both originate from Punjab but which have their nuanced differences. They were supported on harmonium by Londoner Kash Pal who in fact represents the next generation of Qawwali tabla players.
Such a coming together like this is very rare and the small and intimate crowd that attended felt very privileged to have been up close and personal like this. In this piece we see them having a conversation within the iconic qawwali Shah E Mardan Ali; a personal favourite of Ustad Dildar.
