1965-1966 Television Season 50th Anniversary Tribute: Gidget and Sally Field

Fifty years ago today, April 21, 1966, the final episode of Gidget aired on ABC television. Debuting on September 15, 1965, Gidget would run for just one season, but would go on to legendary status, primarily on the high energy, success and talent of the show's young star, Sally Field.

The show is very much a charming slice of mid 1960s teenage nostalgia, and unlike the movie versions of Gidget, this TV version focused much more on the father-daughter relationship, and with great success.  The chemistry between Don Porter, who played Professor Russell Lawrence, and Sally Field as Francis Elizabeth Lawrence (aka Gidget) was priceless.
