After crossing from Rivas to the island of Ometepe in Lake Nicaragua, I set out to explore the amazing street food in Moyogalpa. Come with me as I go on a Nicaraguan street food tour in Moyogalpa, Nicaragua!

Moyogalpa is on the same side of the island as Volcán Concepción, an active volcano on the northwest side of Ometepe. I couldn’t wait to explore!

My friend Carlos from Visit Nicaragua and I started on the main street in the town. We could see some construction workers fixing the street, and saw some colorful homes and buildings. Then, we found some women making tortillas.

I rodered one with cheese and a bit of salsa for breakfast. It looked spicy! It was spicy and had a lot of vinegar, and the cheese was very fresh. I loved the soft, fresh tortilla. It was a great deal for 20 cordoba, or about $0.67 USD!

We continued on, past some small stores selling toys, household items, and more. Then, we found a woman selling enchiladas from a cart on the street. She served it in a bag with cabbage.

My chicken enchilada was very nice and crispy. It was like a flaky empanada with shredded chicken inside. I decided to eat it out of the bag the traditional Nicaraguan way. I crunched it up in the back and sucked it out through a hole I bit in the tip!

Then, I tried her tiste, which she also served in a bag. It’s a corn-based drink that contains cacao, and is so refreshing on a hot day. It was perfect!

Moyogalpa was very small, but there was so much charm, character, and culture there. Then, we headed to Nic en Pollo, which sells fried chicken. I got a drumstick, which was super hot and crispy. It was really nice, and I loved the meat!

We saw lots of coffee shops and walked to Hotel Restaurant Ometepetl, our accomodations for the night. It has 14 rooms, air conditioning, and a pool, and is super clean! It’s located right next to the port. After I dropped off my things, the employees brought me some fresh starfruit juice! It was fantastic!

Then, we hopped in the car and drove across an abandoned airstrip. In the distance, Volcán Concepción loomed over the island, and we could see Lake Nicaragua as well

We drove to La Punta de Jesus Maria, where we saw some fruit vendors selling mangoes, pineapples, oranges, and coconut. I got two fresh coconuts for me and Carlos. It was sweet and really tasty. Then, the vendor chopped them open so we could eat the meat inside. The meat inside was meaty, filling, and super healthy!

Finally, we reached Punta Jesus Maria. It’s a peninsula on Lake Nicaragua and has a beautiful black sand beaches. It’s one of Carlos’ favorite places on the island! At the very tip of the peninsula, you can see both of the island’s volcanoes and the lake. It’s stunning!

Next, we headed to visit a craft vendor named Roger Martinez, who was making some jewelry brom bronze wires. He uses bronze and silver, and a lot of his work contains spiral designs, which is the symbol of the volcanoes Ometepe.

I bought a silver turtle necklace for myself and some bronze pieces for my daughters and niece. I also got a bronze bracelet featuring lots of spirals for myself. I don’t usually wear jewelry, but this was nice and it went with my tattoos!

It cost me 1000 cordobas, or about $30 USD for everything. What a great start to my adventures in Ometepe!
