Alexander I, son of Paul I, became Tsar of Russia in 1801. He was a reformer but also a defender of the traditional laws and customs of Russia. He led the Russian people in the Napoleonic Wars and defeating the French invasion of Russia. Under his leadership the Russian Empire was enlarged to include Poland and Finland as well as other areas. He is alleged to have died in 1825 though some believe he faked his death to spend the rest of his life as a wandering holy man.
