Today in this video Dr Chetan Anchan (orthopaedic oncologist ) is going to tell us about what is Spinal Cancer?

Spinal Cord is not just a single bone structure. The average person is born with 33 individual bones (the vertebrae) that interact and connect with each other through flexible joints called facets. By the time a person becomes an adult most have only 24 vertebrae because some vertebrae at the bottom end of the spine fuse together during normal growth and development.

Types of spinal cancer
When we talk about spinal cancer, Spinal cancer is a relatively rare condition. There are 2 types of spinal tumors that can cause pain: primary tumors and secondary (metastatic) tumors.
Primary Spinal Cancer:  Starts in the bone. The types of primary spinal cancer are :
-Osteosarcomas
-Chondrosarcoma
-Ewing Sarcoma
-Chordoma

Secondary Spinal Cancer: Cancer starts in another part of the body but now has spread to the bone.
It is much more common for bones to be the site of metastasis or spread from cancers that started in another place in the body.

In a cancer patient, there is a 30-70% chance that cancer can spread to the spine. Common cancer that spread in the bones are :
Lung Cancer
Breast Cancer
Prostate Cancer
Kidney Cancer
Thyroid Cancer

How to Diagnose Spine Cancer?
Getting an accurate diagnosis for a spinal tumor is important for determining an effective treatment plan. In the initial stages, there are no symptoms as such, only scanning and testing can give us a diagnosis. When the tumor presses on the spinal cord, symptoms may begin with numbness or tingling in the arms or legs. Next, spinal cancer patients may experience clumsiness, unease from not knowing where their feet are, and difficulty with buttons or keys. Spinal cancer symptoms may grow to include weakness, inability to move the legs, and potentially paralysis.

Symptoms of Spine Cancer
Continuos pain even in the resting position. As the condition progresses the level of pain increases, to the point it's unbearable.
-Loss of sensation or muscle weakness, especially in your arms or legs.
-Pain at the site of the tumour due to tumour growth.
-Difficulty walking
-Difficulty with urination (incontinence)
-Change in bowel habits (retention)
