The much-hyped inauguration of the Phase-I of the 210 km Hindu Hrudaysamrat
Balasaheb Thackeray Samruddhi Mahamarg from Nagpur to Shelu Bazaar (Washim) on
May 2 has been put off as wildlife mitigation structures remain incomplete.
The stage was set for opening of the Phase-I but chief minister ,
whose love for wildlife is well known, seems to have postponed the event as wildlife
overpasses and other mitigation measures are not in place as promised.
Samruddhi Mahamarg between Nagpur-Mumbai (701km) is the first expressway in the
country where nine green bridges (overpasses) and 17 underpasses for wild animals will
be built.
Status updates
May 2016: Five design consultants appointed for making Detailed Project Report (DPR).
May 2017: An SPV named Nagpur Mumbai Super Communication Expressway Limited formed on 31 May 2017.
Jul 2017: Land acquisition process started.
May 2018: MSRDC opened financial bids submitted by qualified contractors.
Jun 2018: Lowest bidders (contractors) identified for 13 packages out of total 16. Bidding for remaining 3 packages to happen soon.
Jan 2019: Contract awarded for all 16 packages by MSRDC to 13 contractors. Road construction started.
Mar 2020: 86% of land acquisition done. Road construction progressing.
Jul 2020: 40% work completed. 623 km stretch between Nagpur to Igatpuri is expected to be ready and opened by December 2021. The 78 km stretch between Igatpuri to Amane by May 2022.
Jul 2021: 60% construction work of 7.78 km long Igatpuri tunnel (Package-14) completed as on 10 July. Once ready, it will be Maharashtra's longest road tunnel, and India's widest road tunnel.
April 2022: Shivmadka (Nagpur district) to Shelu Bazar (Washim district) 210 km stretch of expressway is expected to be opened by 2 May 2022.
Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg ( Mumbai–Nagpur Expressway ) is an under construction 700 km long, 8 lane access controlled expressway, connecting the both capitals of Maharashtra, Mumbai and Nagpur. The expressway will pass through 10 districts, 26 tehsils, and 392 villages in the state and is expected to cut travel time between the two cities to 16 hours to 8 hours. The project is expected to cost Rs 46,000 crores and requires the acquisition of 8,603 hectares of land.
