In today's episode of The Right Choices with Oracles of Dalal Street, we're joined by Jigar Mistry. He guides us on investing through stock market cycles for better returns.
Jigar begins the conversation by explaining why one cannot make money by using the the same strategy across cycles. He believes everything operates in a cycle.
He shows us how cycles operates at market cap, sector and stock level. He also shows that there is a difference between a good investment and a good company.
A good company may or may not be always a good investment. He has explained the cyclical movement in stocks with examples of Coca-Cola, IBM, HUL and Colgate.
Apurva and Jigar both suggests looking at stock SIP's as a good method for long term investment. You must not time the market every month if you do a stock SIP. Disciplined investment in it can generate phenomenal returns across cycles.
Jigar has also insisted investors to spend more time in deciding which sector to pick rather than focusing on individual stocks. An investment in a bad company in a good sector has generated better returns than an investment in good company in a bad sector.
Analyzing cyclical nature of sectors will help you avoid the poor ones as something is moving up doesn’t always mean it will continue to move up.
