Here is a video lesson on playing two-surface ride cymbal patterns and how to develop coordination in conjunction with them. I am using two 20” Paiste traditional flat rides for this video. The lower pitched cymbal is on my right and has rivets. The higher pitched cymbal is on my left. I usually use this pitch configuration so that my strong hand is playing the lower pitched cymbal but don;t feel like you have to do that.
This kind of flat ride playing is incorporated by several  well known drummers playing very different stylistically including Danny Gottlieb and Paul Wertico (both formally with the Pat Metheny Group), the late, great Jon Christensen with Keith Jarrett (and on many other ECM recordings) and Roy Haynes with Chick Corea. The intermingling of these two cymbals creates a light , airy pad for the music to float over. You don't have to use flat rides for this but the cymbals you use should be on the thinner side.
I also show you how to apply a few common rudiments on the cymbals to this concept.
I use the exercises from my book Advanced Coordination for Drum Set and Hand Percussion to work on this type of playing with students. If you are interested in a copy email me at [email protected]

The drums used in the video are Gretsch Centennial from 1983. The sizes of these drums are: 18"x14" bass,10",12",14" toms and a 14"x 6.5" snare.  The drum heads are all calf skin.
The cymbals in this video are
