Joker: Folie à Deux can continue Arthur's descent into villainy by giving him a companion to go down the rabbit hole with. Enter Gaga's Harley Quinn. Joker: Folie à Deux makes a major change to Harley, switching up her origin story of meeting the Joker as his doctor in Arkham Asylum, for her and Phoenix's character both being patients at the facility. With set photos and videos from the Joker sequel showing Arkham Asylum burning, it seems like the deranged duo will be escaping the facility during a riot. Out in the world, there is no limit to what Joker and Harley can accomplish together, especially since the original Joker ended up with Arthur fully transformed into his Clown Prince of Crime persona. With the addition of Gaga's Harley, Joker: Folie à Deux can show how Arthur actually behaves in a relationship, as 2019's Joker only included the character in an imagined relationship with Zazie Beetz's Sophie, showing how the Joker is an unreliable narrator.
Gaga's addition as Harley Quinn in Joker: Folie à Deux is also crucial to the movie in another way, with the actress being a perfect fit for the sequel's groundbreaking choice of genre for a superhero movie. Joker: Folie à Deux is a musical with set pieces said to be in the vein of Damien Chazelle's La La Land. As Gaga is one of the world's most famous singers, the actress was the perfect fit to bring Harley Quinn to life in Joker: Folie à Deux.
