When a couple hears that they are having twins, they expect their children to look alike. Even twins who are not identical often look very similar. Many parents buy identical outfits for their children to wear since they are twins. This is what a couple from Gloucester, England did when they found out that they were having twins. When the babies were born, the parents got the shock of their life.
Donna and Vince had three children. They had two sons named George and Jordan, and a daughter named Chynna. When Donna found out that she was pregnant, they were excited about the idea of having a fourth child. When Donna went for her first ultrasound, she got the news that she wasn't ready for. She was pregnant with twins. They weren't sure who their children would look more like since they came from different ethnic backgrounds. Donna is half Jamaican, and Vince is Caucasian.
When Donna had her ultrasound, she found out that she was having twin girls, but they were not identical. They were fraternal. This meant that they each came from a separate egg as opposed to identical twins, who come from the same egg that separates. Fraternal twins don't have the exact same genes; however, many fraternal twins look a lot alike.
Maria and Lucy Aylmer were born on January 16, 1997. When their daughters were born, Donna, Vince, and their doctors were shocked. Lucy had very light skin and red hair. Maria had very dark skin and dark curly hair. If they didn't know any better, they would have thought that their daughters weren't related at all.
For the first several years of the twin's lives, Donna dressed them identically the way the mothers of many twins do. Most people who saw the family were confused. They couldn't figure out why these two girls were dressed identically when they weren't even related. Even though they were twins, you couldn't even tell that they were sisters.
According to Maria and Lucy, their older siblings have skin tones that are halfway between their mother's, and halfway between their father's. Lucy and Maria are different. Lucy has her father's dark skin and no sign of her mother's light skin. It was the opposite with Maria. She had her mother's dark skin, but there was no sign that her father was Causation.
When the girls turned 7-years-old, they asked their mother to stop dressing them in identical outfits.
They both knew that they didn't look like twins, so why would they need to dress like twins. It didn't take much encouragement to get their mother to agree. Maria says that dressing like twins was fun when they were younger, but by the time they were 7-years-old, they wanted to be individuals. They didn't even like being called, "the twins." They preferred to be called by their names or "the girls." Lucy says that there is much more to them than being a set of twins. They were individuals, and they wanted people to recognize that. The girls' parents say that it took some getting used to, but they don't call them "the twins" as often as they once did.
Like most kids, each girl had something that they didn't like about themselves. Maria hated her curly hair. She wished it was pin straight like her sisters. Lucy didn't like her pale skin. The kids at school called her, ghost, and often told her that she was adopted. Her twin sister had dark skin, and her other siblings had skin much darker than hers. She hated to be bullied about her light skin. When Maria got older, she started to straighten her hair to make it straight. The girls had each other, so being bullied wasn't as difficult.
When the girls got older, they started developing their own personal styles. Lucy says that their individual styles started coming out when their mother finally agreed to stop making them dress like twins. Like their look and complexions, their styles today are entirely different. You should see how ridiculously different these biracial twins look at 18 years old.
Just because these girls don't look like twins, it doesn't mean that they don't feel like twins. The girls say that they are each other's best friends. This is common in twins. While they don't have a psychic connection where they can read each other's minds, they say that they still do feel a connection. There are times when Lucy gets hurt, and Maria can feel a twinge of pain as well. This is a common phenomenon in twins. Even if they don't look alike, they are still connected.
