There are cult classics, and then there’s Liquid Sky. Set in New York City years before Lena Dunham even heard of Brooklyn, the most successful indie film of 1983 (which had a four year theatrical run) features: An actor playing not only two different characters, but also two different genders, a fashion show that would either confuse the most avant-garde designers or inspire them to steal ideas, and, oh yes, aliens that make humans disappear upon achieving orgasm.

A product of the “No Wave” underground film movement of the mid-70s to early 80s, Liquid Sky had been mostly forgotten, but a newly re-mastered version released earlier this year and a screening in New York’s Greenwich Village, where the No Wave movement was born, has revitalized interest in the movie. The acting will not wow anyone, but witnessing what a few people with a few cameras were able to accomplish in terms of vision, artistry, and the spirit of the times might inspire you to pick up that camera you carry in your pocket all the time and use it to tell your own raw and visionary stories.
