Unknown devices show up in the Windows Device Manager when Windows can’t identify a piece of hardware and provide a driver for it. An unknown device isn’t just unknown — it’s not functioning until you install the right driver.

The Device Manager in your system is the place where all the Windows identified hardware related to your system is arranged in an organized manner and offers a central view of all the hardware devices to the user. So, whether it’s your sound card, graphic card, camera, printer, Bluetooth or network adapters, you get all the hardware listed here. You can update, enable/disable, uninstall, rollback, or scan for hardware changes for the driver from here.

Each hardware device listed in Device Manager must be enabled before Windows can use it. Once enabled, Windows can assign system resources to the device.

By default, Windows enables all hardware that it recognizes. A device that isn't enabled will be marked by a black arrow in Device Manager, or a red x in Windows XP.  Disabled devices also generate a Code 22 error in Device Manager.

You can enable a device from the device's Properties in Device Manager. However, the detailed steps involved in enabling a device vary depending on which Windows operating system you're using; the small differences are called out below.

Windows can identify most devices and download drivers for them automatically. When this process fails — or if you disable automatic driver downloads — you’ll have to identify the device and hunt the driver down on your own..

Windows 10’s Device Manager usually lists webcams under the Imaging devices category. However, some users have stated that they can’t find their webcams in Device Manager.

Thus, their webcams, or even all image devices, are missing. Consequently, those users can’t utilize their webcams in Windows 10. This is how users can restore webcams in Device Manager

This tutorial will apply for computers, laptops, desktops, and tablets running the Windows 10, Windows 8/8.1, Windows 7 operating systems. Works for all major computer manufactures (Dell, HP, Acer, Asus, Toshiba, Lenovo, Samsung).
