Membrane Asymmetry and Sidedness

Biology Professor (Twitter: @DrWhitneyHolden) teaches about membranes, explaining how lipid bilayers have natural asymmetry, where the inner and outer leaflets are distinct from each other.  Topics covered include common characteristics of each leaflets (like what types of lipids are more prevalent) and how this "sidedness" is built during membrane synthesis by the endomembrane system and flippase and floppase enzymes to form functional membranes.  The differences between lateral and transverse membrane diffusion are described.
