When fabric is sewn it tends to shrink or pucker slightly, this is normal and expected in any sewing project. The severity of this fact can vary depending on a few factors of how the fabric is sewn. In this video we will demonstrate the natural consequences of this fact and help explain why it happens and how to reduce the shrinkage or pucker to a minimum. Sailrite calls this issue “needle pucker phenomenon”.
The issue is more prevalent in a tightly woven fabrics, outdoor fabric are a prime example of a tightly woven fabric. These yarns are oriented in very tight layers and these layers cannot shift easily. So, when the fabric is sewn the layers don’t compensate for the thread as it is inserted between the yarns. This causes the tight yarns in the fabric to draw up giving a rippled appearance along the seam line it also shrinks up the fabric as it is being sewn. This is typically more of a problem when seams are sewn in the warp direction than in the weft (filling) or bias directions.
