Aralkum (Aral + Turkic kum, sand, Kazakh Aralqum, Uzbek Orol choʻli) is a new desert forming on the site of the drying up Aral Sea. The sandy-salt desert lies on the territory of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, on the northwestern extremity of the Karakum and Kyzylkum deserts. The desert is also called Akkum (White Desert). After the construction of the Kokaral Dam in 2005, the Northern Aral is being restored, but the Southern Aral is drying up, increasing the area of Aralkum. Aralkum covers an area of more than 38 thousand km² and is a powerful source of wind removal[5]. Dust storms carry about 100 million tons of toxic salts and dust per year. Fine dust carried out from the former bottom of the reservoir contains remnants of mineral fertilizers and pesticides that were washed out from irrigated fields.
