Brazil (1985) by Terry Gilliam, Clip: Opening titles and, umm, "I want to talk to you about ducts.."

The Image: For me, this film will forever be associated with my 1986 Freshers Week at university which is where I first saw the movie (at the Mumford Theatre!) - along with The Draughtsman's Contract and The Mission - all directors entirely unknown to me at the time. Of course nearly everyone loves this film - especially perhaps the opening which in a way encapsulates everything the film will be about - including that brain worm song, 'Aquarela do Brasil'. Personally, I always loved (Deputy Minister) Eugene Helpmann's* name - and stiff upper lip dialogue in this scene - so terribly British - and silly! (And don't forget that eye-catching advertisement for 'ducts' which come in all different sizes - and colours! And of course, ducts will be very important later in the film as a bizarre means of Sam evading capture by government agents!) * Played by Peter Vaughan by the way (only British viewers of my generation will know the name - you probably think I am going to say how he played Grouty in Porridge (which he did!) but I liked him best as Mr Johnson in Citizen Smith - he had a wonderfully disapproving face!)
