Mysore, officially known as Mysuru, is a metropolitan city in the southern Indian state of Karnataka. It's the state's second-most populous city and is renowned for its cleanliness. Mysore has a rich history as the capital of the Kingdom of Mysore for nearly six centuries, under the rule of the Wadiyar dynasty. The city is a hub for heritage structures and palaces, most notably the Mysore Palace, and is celebrated for its cultural contributions, earning nicknames like "City of Palaces," "Heritage City," and "Cultural Capital of Karnataka."
Situated at the foothills of the Chamundi Hills, Mysore is geographically positioned at an elevation of 770 meters above sea level. It's approximately 140 km southwest of Bangalore, covering an area of 156 km². The city's population, along with its neighboring towns, totals about 1.288 million as of 2023.
Mysore's development is largely credited to the Wadiyar dynasty, who were great patrons of art and culture. The city also saw significant contributions from Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan, who promoted silk production and fought against the British in four wars. Today, the Mysore City Corporation oversees the city's administration.
The city is a major tourist destination, especially during the Dasara festival, attracting visitors worldwide. Mysore is also associated with various art forms, foods, and products like Mysore painting, Mysore Pak, Mysore Dosa, Mysore Sandal Soap, and Mysore silk saris. The name Mysore is derived from "Mahishūru," meaning "the abode of Mahisha" in Kannada, referring to the demon Mahishasura from Hindu mythology, who was slain by the goddess Chamundeshwari, whose temple is atop the Chamundi Hills.
In 2014, the Government of India approved the renaming of Mysore to Mysuru as part of a city name change initiative. The city's history, cultural significance, and contributions to art, cuisine, and industry make it a unique and vibrant part of India's heritage.
