Here’s Phönix 97. The new police helicopter at Hannover Airport.

There it is. EC 135 P2. Its aircraft registration code is D-HPNE. It’s name? Phönix 97. It is equipped with state-of-the-art technology. And for 10 million Euros, you get quite a bit. Next year it will be joined by Phönix 98, another helicopter manufactured by “Airbus Helicopters Deutschland.” The investment was urgently needed. The newest generation will replace the 35-year-old predecessors. Speaking to numerous media representatives and special guests at Hanover Airport, Minister of the Interior Boris Pistorius emphasizes what a good investment it is. Boris Pistorius – Interior Minister of Lower Saxony: “We need a helicopter fleet. With aircraft which can reach any location in a reasonable amount of time. For us, that’s 30 minutes. That requires modern aircraft with modern equipment. That’s why I’m so glad we are putting the first of two new Airbus helicopters into operation today. It’s a good decision, an expensive one. But we‘re delighted because it will enable the police to carry out their important tasks in remote areas too.” To ensure effective, safe and high-precision flights, the police helicopter squadron made quite a few demands on the manufacturer, but ones which the Airbus Helicopters plant had no difficulty implementing. Dr. Wolfgang Schoder – Airbus Helicopters Deutschland “What matters most when it comes to police helicopters is high performance, quiet operation and most of all, excellent equipment. The technical equipment is the defining feature of any police helicopter.” Pilot Kersten Balogh had the honor of flying the new aircraft from Donauwörth to Hanover, a 400 km stretch. Its flight characteristics are not the only thing that impressed him. Hanover Airport TV had exclusive coverage of his first landing on Lower Saxon soil. Kersten Balogh - Pilot: “The thermal imaging, the camera equipment, the entire transmission technology is excellent. It really gives you fantastic images.” Image operator Detlef Fricke is in charge of these. Detlef Fricke – Image operator: “The camera you see here is top-notch, the most up-to-date one on the market. A large part of it is about searching for missing and helpless persons, potential suicides, children and old people. That’s actually the main purpose.” After a short round over Hanover, the new equipment gets a proper christening. In 2014 the police helicopters of Lower Saxony were deployed about 1,500 times.
