This is a game that I've had requested on the channel a lot of times, but something that never initially clicked for me.  Despite it essentially being the combat-style I enjoyed, the first few times I played through it never really stuck with me and I stopped after a few bosses.  This time however I stuck it out, and I'm extremely glad I did.  The story itself was incredible, even as a first time God of War player.  It was the first game I've ever found myself actually taking detours to listen to more lore of the game, and getting in and out of the boat (or the portals) to hear more tales from Mimir or anything else.  On that front, it was was one of the best experiences for story in gaming I've had.

The combat itself took a little to adjust to, mainly due to a couple of annoyances for taking no damage.  In playing normally it was fine and a lot of fun, it was just when avoiding any forms of damage there was a few pain points.  Namely the fact that you can still take damage during runic attacks and being prone to counter attacks, so it felt like a gamble at times despite wanting to use them.  No iframe dodging meaning you have to block certain attacks (generally I like to avoid to doing so, not a game-fault though).  And throwing axe being extremely strong/overpowered in general.

All of that being said though, that's purely from a no damage perspective and not a reflection on the combat or game itself.  For a first playthrough, and without going for no damage, it was incredibly fun and an enjoyable experience.  The unique boss fights were a spectacle in every way, and fights I'll all remember in gaming.  It also has me very excited for the God of War Ragnarok release in November 2022, which I'm hoping to cover extensively on the channel.

As for the bosses themselves, I had a couple of rules for the run.  No damage (obviously), but all of them had to be done in the same boss fight.  Meaning not skipping phases for each checkpoint, all in the one fight.  There's also some bosses where they had massive combat lead-ups, so I'd only keep the "phase" they were in (including all enemies that spawn as a part of the boss fight), to avoid bloating the video anymore.  I also chose not to put the Baldur on the dragon fight in for the same reason.  It didn't have the typical "boss fight" health bar that all the others have, and was essentially an interactive cutscene (a great one to be fair).  Although, I did put the endings in to lead up to God of War Ragnarok (also where the thumbnail comes from), so perhaps I should've left Baldur in.  No big deal either way.  The difficulty is shown after Sigrun, Baldur, and as part of the ending sequence.

All-in-all, it was a brilliant game that I wish I got around to sooner, but it's still good timing with the God of War Ragnarok announcement anyway.
