Kanyakumari, officially Kanniyakumari and also
Kanyakumari, officially Kanniyakumari and also known as Cape Comorin, is a city located in the Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu, India. It is notable for being the southernmost tip of the Indian subcontinent and the southernmost city in mainland India, often referred to as "The Land's End." The city is situated 90 kilometers south of Thiruvananthapuram and about 20 kilometers south of Nagercoil, the headquarters of Kanyakumari district.
Kanyakumari is a renowned tourist destination and pilgrimage center, famous for its unique sunrise and sunset views, the 41-meter Thiruvalluvar Statue, and the Vivekananda Rock Memorial off the coast. The town is bordered on three sides by the Laccadive Sea and has a coastline of 71.5 kilometers. A temple dedicated to the Hindu goddess Kanya Kumari, the virgin goddess, is located on the shores of the city, giving the town its name. The town has historical significance, with references in old Malayalam literature and accounts by Ptolemy and Marco Polo.
The name Kanyakumari derives from the goddess Kanya Kumari, considered to be the sister of Krishna. The goddess is believed to remove the rigidity from the mind, and women pray for marriage at her temple. The town and its district were renamed "Kanniyakumari" by the Government of India and the Government of Madras in 2016, correcting the earlier corrupted name "Comorin" from the time of British rule in India.
According to Hindu legend, Kanya Devi, an avatar of Parvati, was to marry Shiva, who failed to show up on his wedding day, leading to the uncooked grains for the feast turning into stones over time. Kanya Devi is now considered a virgin goddess who blesses pilgrims and tourists. Another legend mentions Hanuman dropping a piece of earth near Kanyakumari during the Ramayana War, forming an area rich in unique medicinal plants.
Kanyakumari has a diverse population, with a significant percentage of Christians, Hindus, and Muslims as per the 2011 Census. The town is known for its high literacy rate and a balanced sex ratio. The geography of Kanyakumari, with its unique location at the confluence of the Western and Eastern Coastal Plains, and its climate, characterized by tropical coastal weather, make it a distinctive place in India.
