2. Emile Durkheim

The Elementary Forms of Religious Life (2001), first published in 1912 by French sociologist Emile Durkheim, was a groundbreaking work, which presents an extended argument examining the relationship between religion and society.
His work has influenced or addressed issues of functionalism, materialism, idealism and structuralism, to name just a few.
