Despite having been drawn to vaudeville and illusions since he was a young boy in Liverpool, practising magic tricks was mostly a hobby to Arthur until he was in his 40s.
Then, after a tragic turn of events, he sold his motor garage on the Gold Coast to pursue a professional life in magic.
He made his name as a daring entertainer by escaping from a locked 44-gallon drum submerged in a pool of sharks.
Within a few years, his death-defying escapes on TV shows A Big Country and The Don Lane Show, earned him the title of 'Australia's Houdini'.
After Arthur's escapes TV station and talkback switchboards would be jammed with callers offering their best guesses as to how he he'd done it.
Life for almost a decade involved presenting multiple illusion shows at the Magic Castle (a Gold Coast tourist attraction) by day; and at the Broadbeach Hotel by night.
His daughter, Helen Coghlan, has followed Arthur into the spotlight, presenting mindboggling illusions built by Arthur to great effect on TV show, Penn and Teller.
At 89 years old, Arthur is still performing.
