Travelers venturing across the Arabian
Travelers venturing across the Arabian desert carry many tales of the enchanting East. Yet, traversing this desert landscape is also known for its peril and monotony. To this end, the melody of the mizmar, singing, and swift dancing provided solace to the Arabian traveler throughout the vast dunes and valleys of his land.
The piece "Sehr Al-Sharq" draws inspiration from the heritage of the Al-Mahra region, renowned for its sprawling deserts and valleys. Consequently, the mizmar and the oud are employed in the Mahri style, with a lively and upbeat rhythm, resonating with the art of "Al-Bara'" – a style also prevalent in the neighboring Sultanate of Oman.
The composer employed a distinct and passionate Mahri choral ensemble, crafting them in a manner that seems as if they're narrating yet another enchanting tale from the chronicles of the East.
Through “Sehr Al-Sharq”, Al-Qahoum aimed to shed light on the deep-rooted culture of Al-Mahra – from the camel caravans that once transported the treasures of the East to the world.
The "Heritage Symphonies Project" is one of the exceptional programs adopted by the Hadhramaut Foundation for Culture, Yemen. It's an ambitious initiative that aims to integrate traditional artistic elements into global music. This involves composing musical pieces inspired by authentic heritage motifs and placing them within a modern musical framework, which are then presented in orchestral concerts.
