The Rhine Falls, together with
The Rhine Falls, together with the Sarpsfossen in Norway, is one of the three largest waterfalls in Europe. With an average of 577 m³/s, the Sarpsfossen has more water, while the twice as high Dettifoss on Iceland only has about half as much water. The Rhine Falls are located in Switzerland on the territory of the municipalities of Neuhausen am Rheinfall in the canton of Schaffhausen (right bank) and Laufen-Uhwiesen in the canton of Zurich (left bank), about four kilometers west below the city of Schaffhausen. The Rhine Falls are 23 meters high and 150 meters wide. The scour in the impact zone is 13 meters deep. With an average flow of the Rhine, 373 cubic meters of water per second fall over the rocks in the Rhine Falls (average summer discharge: around 600 m³/s). The highest flow rate was measured in 1965 with 1250 cubic meters, the lowest flow rate in 1921 with 95 cubic meters per second. Also in the years 1880, 1913 and 1953 the discharge was similarly small.

Schloss Laufen is located on the left bank of the Rhine in its section between Lake Constance and Basel on a steep cliff above the Rhine Falls and offers a view over the Rhine and the waterfall. A footpath leads from the castle to the Känzeli, where visitors can see the Rhine Falls up close.
The first documented mention of Laufen Castle dates back to 858 AD. The castle was the ancestral seat of the Barons of Laufen. The lord of the castle or his bailiff was responsible for the bailiwick of the neighboring communities, while the landlordship belonged to the bishop of Constance.
