This is a color comparison of the "Right, Cut it open!" scene from Episode 3 of the 1970 Doctor Who six-episode serial, The Ambassadors of Death.

Unfortunately, the original PAL prints of episodes 2-6 were junked sometime between 1974 and 1978, leaving only Black and White 16mm prints. Fortunately, episode 1 in the serial survives in its original PAL tape, being the earliest Doctor Who episode to do so.

In the early 1980's, Doctor Who fan Tom Lundie returned his off-air Betamax videotapes of various Pertwee episodes that he made in the 70's to the BBC. While most of them were in viewable condiction, his tapes of the Ambassadors of Death had rainbow colour banding from interference, making it difficult to recolorize the serial.

In 1985, an attempt to pair the colour signal from the Betamax tapes to the 16mm prints were made, but deemed unusable.

In 2002, a restoration project for the story's VHS release combined the usable colour information from the domestic recordings with the black and white picture from the film prints, creating a high-quality colour picture. All told, over half of the serial's running time was presented in colour, including all of episodes 1 and 5, and sections from 2, 3, 6 and 7. The remaining footage, including all of episode 4, was deemed unsuitable for restoration, and so remained in black-and-white.

In 2012, the entire serial underwent the Chroma Dot Colour Recovery for the DVD release. The Chroma Dot Colour Recovery produced a clean and complete color signal, giving a much better result. As a result, the serial is now complete in colour for the first time since at least 1974.

This comparison shows the 1970 16mm B&W print on the top left, the 1985 attempt on the top right, the D3 partial-colourized version on the bottom left, and the chroma dot colorized version on the right, Enjoy!
