Lot of people confuse vertigo with giddiness. Giddiness is not the same as vertigo. Please do make a note of it. Don’t confuse all giddiness with vertigo. Vertigo is by and large a classical ear problem. Sometimes it may be also associated with brain disorders. How do we know we are having vertigo or not. Just to mention in common terms. Vertigo we can only feel when we have a spinning motion of the environment or yourself or of both. If you don’t have the feeling of something spinning around you like a merry-go-round and you are spinning around and acts like a merry-go-round, don’t call it a vertigo. General unsteadiness or imbalance is not vertigo. So only if you have the feeling of the walls or the environment around you is spinning violently, with lot of nausea and vomiting and sweating, only that is called vertigo. So of you have vertigo, come to an ENT surgeon and make sure whether anything is wrong with your ears. If your ears are fine, then he will refer you to a neurologist to see whether there is something wrong with the brain.  There are many types of vertigo. The most common is we call is benign positional vertigo. From the name you can understand it is benign and it is nothing to panic. It is not life threatening. It is positional. This is the most important thing. It is dependent on the position of your body. Usually it happens when you are lying down, when you are sleeping and you turn to a particular side. Suppose if your right ears is the pathological ear, from where the vertigo is originating. So the moment you turn towards the right the whole room starts spinning and you are totally panicky that the entire room is spinning around you. So that is called as benign positional vertigo, which is very commonly seen in lot of people. Nothing to panic, nothing to worry. If it happen at night, just lay still open your eyes and look towards the ceiling, the vertigo will subside in 10 minutes. The next day morning, you can come to an ENT specialist in any of our hospitals and they will take care of you. This is the first common type of vertigo. There are other types of vertigo as well, which originates in the ear. The other is called as Meniere’s disease where there is sudden increase in pressure in the balance organ inside the ear, due to which you get a violent attack of vertigo. The whole room will be spinning around you. You have nausea, vomiting, sweating and along with it. There are two other symptoms, that are not seen in the first mentioned vertigo, that is benign positional vertigo, which is seen in Meniere’s disease. The other two symptoms that is seen along with vertigo are a buzzing or a ringing sound in there, that is tinnitus or sometimes you see  a slight decreased hearing in your ears, as if your ears are blocked if triad of  symptoms if it is present, it is diagnosed as Meniere’s disease. The third type of vertigo, commonly seen is vestibular neuronitis. It is also a very benign disease and there is nothing to get panicky. The cause is if you have a very bad viral infection of your throat and nose and a few weeks before the attack of vertigo. The balance sometimes attacks your balance organs in the nose and cause a violent attack of vertigo, the hearing is preserved. There is usually no buzzing or ringing sound coming from the ear or only get vertigo, which sometimes may persist for a week or couple of weeks. Come and show the ENT specialists in a hospital and they will take care of you.
