Object Shows: Where to Start

Does the average person know where to begin when making their show?

Let’s talk about it.

The first thing that should be decided is the overarching plot. Is it a competition? Are they trying to save the world? Regardless, what does it mean to the characters? Do they even wanna do this, are they being forced, etc. Who are the characters? What do they have in common, and what are their differences? Who are enemies, who are friends? How does the main plot affect their relationships? What arcs will these characters go through - how will they be different from the first episode vs. the last?

Oddly enough, the perfect place to go from there is the end. People should be able to watch your first episode and see bits and pieces that would eventually add up to your last episode - it creates a trajectory that makes the story easy to follow! So if a “nice character” turns into a villain by the end of the series, we should be able to see glimpses of what may come in episodes 1 and 2 - something for the viewers to look back on and go, OH!!! It was SO obvious, how’d I miss it??

Once you plan that (doesn’t have to be SUPER specific, a rough plan works), you can write the first script with your characters and the end goal in mind.

Next, I ALWAYS recommend making a spreadsheet. Spreadsheets are the backbone of this community, and every great object show has one. Write down everything that needs to be done - Scripting, Voice Acting, Audio, Props/Backgrounds, Animation, Finalizing scenes, and editing. Then, you can create dropdowns with people’s names to assign them roles, and you can color code when things are completed! This will keep you on track so you never accidentally assign two people the same job, and it keeps you motivated!

Next, write your script. I recommend you write your first episode by yourself - it’s your show, you know your characters, and your first draft should be all you. Then you can ask people to revise it, to tell you what they like, what they don’t, what you can cut, or even what they learn from the script - AKA, are you showing enough about your characters and their world?

After that it’s the standard process of voice acting next, then audio, then props/bg, and then animation. For these, because it’s your first episode, you really get to decide the style you’re going for! The character bodies, the backgrounds - what kind of color scheme are you going for? Super saturated, super dull? Whatever it is, have fun with it!! Do something no one’s ever seen before, or just do simple object show animation - whatever it is, just choose what YOU want to do!

Making an object show with a great crew can be hard, but it’s real work experience that’ll teach you SO many valuable skills. So if you were thinking about making an object show, take this as your sign!!
