In this video tutorial we'll show you how to sew a Hong Kong or bias bound seam. We'll explain where it is used and why then show you step by step how to sew one. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced sewist this video will help you to get professional results in your sewing. A Hong Kong finish is where the raw edges of the seam allowances of a garment are finished with bias binding. It is often found on unlined jackets, dresses, skirts and coats and high end garments. You can use ready made bias binding or create your own and it is an opportunity to add some real wow factor to the inside of your garments. Start by sewing the seam in the normal way, right sides together. Pin the bias binding right sides together along one of the seam allowances lining up the raw edges. Stitch a 1/4" seam to secure the binding to the seam allowance ensuring the main garment fabric is out of the way. Press the binding away from the seam allowance and then over and under so that it covers the 1/4" stitching line. If you're working with a heavy weight fabric you might want to trim the 1/4" seam slightly, but take care when pressing the binding over the edge that it is a nice, even width. You can either stitch the binding with a stitch in the ditch to secure, using a matching thread to the main garment fabric or another alternative is to topstitch it down. I like to use my clear presser foot to stitch in the ditch, but you can also buy stitch in the ditch feet for most makes and models of machine. ► Website www.sewessential.co.uk/ ► Blog www.sewessential.co.uk/blog ► Sewing machine accessories www.sewessential.co.uk/sewing-machines-and-accesso… ► Ready made bias binding www.sewessential.co.uk/haberdashery/consumables/bi… Carefree Melody by Twin Musicom is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (creativecommons.org/licenses/...)Source: www.twinmusicom.org/song/302/c...Artist: www.twinmusicom.org/
