Riccardo Chailly, Deutsches Symphonie-orchester. painting by A. Schoenberg (Self-portrait). Commonly knomn as one of the biggest compositions ever, those lieder were written in the first period of composition of Schoenberg with other big-scaled pieces such as Pelleas und Melisande op.5. this cantata is based on the legend of the love between King of Denmark Valdemar IV and his mistress Tove, and is scored for an unusually large ensemble (approximately 400 musicians including 10 horns, a quadruple man-choir, and 8 flutes. lilttle anecdote, this piece was so big that Schoenberg had to order a special kind of paper (48 staves per page) to compose GurreLieder.
