Join me as I take a stroll in downtown Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan!

Bishkek is the capital city of Kyrgyzstan, a landlocked country located in Central Asia that is surrounded by Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and China.

The city counts about 1 million people and lies in the Chu river valley, near the Kyrgyz mountains at an elevation of 2,500 to 3,000 feet (that’s about 750-900 meters).

The city’s history dates back to 1825, when the Uzbek Khanate of Kokand which ruled the area at that time, established a fortress in that location and named it Bishkek. The fortress was subsequently occupied by the Russians in 1862. By 1913, Bishkek’s population numbered around 14,000, mostly Russians, and the city became the administrative centre of a district.

In 1924, Bishkek was chosen as the administrative centre of the new Kyrgyz autonomous province.

In 1926, the autonomous province became the Kyrgyz Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, and Bishkek was renamed Frunze after the revolutionary and Red Army leader Mikhail Vasilyevich Frunze, who had been born there in 1885.

Frunze developed rapidly into a modern city and was eventually renamed Bishkek again in 1991 when Kyrgyzstan acquired its independence following the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Bishkek is laid out on a grid with wide tree-lined avenues and many beautiful parks and orchards, making it one of the greenest cities in the world.

To truly appreciate Bishkek and its beautiful natural surroundings, one should visit in Spring or Summer when the weather is good, the flowers are blooming and the water fountains are on!
