The A-6E, the definitive version of the Navy's A-6 Intruder attack bomber with upgraded navigation and attack systems, was introduced in 1970 and first deployed on 9 December 1971. The earlier separate search and track fire control radars of the A-6A/B/C were replaced by a single Norden AN/APQ-148 mult-imode radar, and on board computers with a more sophisticated & reliable IC based system. The film covers the essential role of the A6 as the most potent attack weapon for Vietnam War era US Navy Carrier battle groups. A series of Naval and Marine corps commanders give detailed examples of how the aircraft was used in a wide variety of roles including close air support strikes coordinated with ground troops and long range all weather bombing missions., supplemented by copious film footage of air action in the field.
